Catching Up On Flickr

Yes, I know I'm way behind on my Flickr updates. I still, for example, haven't uploaded my pics from our Hong Kong trip or Rogerio and Alana's wedding. I'll get to those soon, I hope.

But I did get a lot done today. Flickr's servers are probably melting from the strain.

• Flourish 2009: This is a conference dedicated to open-source software such as Linux, which is the computer operating system I use at home. Leticia and I volunteer our graphic design and marketing assistance, respectively.
• Mesh 2009: This is Canada's premier conference discussing new and emerging media. I gave a talk about corporate online citizenship, called "Managing Personas Online."
• Opening of the Art Institute's new Modern Wing: This is pretty amazing. I can't wait to go back.
• Disney Parks, Orlando: You can watch all 300 of these photos, or take them in park-by-park.

  • Disney Hollywood Studios
  • Magic Kingdom

• Edelman 3rd Annual New Media Academic Summit: Every year since 2007, Edelman has hosted a two-day conference with communications, journalism, and business professors from around the U.S.... and the world! This year, my colleagues and I led an intensive five-hour seminar, ending with a live talk show that went out over the Internet. These pictures were taken by Dr. Dennis Wilcox, PR prof at San Jose State University.

Our Honeymoon In Galena

Leticia just uploaded a photoset of our honeymoon trip to Galena, Illinois.

We stayed at the most excellent Farmer's Guest House B&B, lovingly restored and maintained by Jess and Kathie Farlow.

Restaurants enjoyed include Fried Green Tomatoes (Italian), Fritz & Frites (German/French fusion), Durty Gurt's (hamburgers), and Benjamin's (bar & grill).

Also spent quite a bit of time reading and relaxing at Kaladi's Coffee Bar.

And, of course, who could forget Kandy Kitchen?

Taking advantage of Jess and Kathie's prodigious DVD collection (dwarfed only by Jess's academic-scale knowledge and library of jazz), we watched:

• Boys Don't Cry -  De-feminizing Hilary Swank strikes one as kind of difficult.
• Million Dollar Baby - Oh, wait... Never mind...
• The Number 23 - Leticia and I were married on Nov. 3, or 11/3. 1+1 = 2. Ergo: 23. We were born in 1974. Going from inside-out, 9-7 = 2 and 4-1 = 3 -- 23 again. Wikipedia has more on the 23 enigma.
• Knocked Up - An IMDB user sums it up well: "Vulgar, but certainly not stupid."
• Zodiac - Wow... Robert Downey, Jr. playing a drugged-out alcoholic. Reminded of when Sir Laurence Olivier told Dustin Hoffman "Why not try acting?" on the set of Marathon Man. Look for Downey to play fictional industrialist Tony Stark in Iron Man. (In the comic, which I devoured as a kid, Stark became an alcoholic.) See a pattern?
• Secondhand Lions - History will likely remember Michael Caine as one of the best all-time actors, guaranteed.

Back to reality, such as it is, on Jan. 2.

I just got back from our annual father/son fishing trip to Kennedy Meadows.

As I was collecting the 380-odd photos snapped from this trip, I realized that I never got around to uploading the photos from last year.

Carlinhos Brown Plays Millennium Park

Leticia and I just saw Carlinhos Brown put on an incredible show at Millennium Park.

Of course, before tonight, I only knew him from his work on Sepultura's groundbreaking Roots album (see video for "Ratamahatta").

Here are the photos from our smartphones, in two sets. It was an excellent time, not to mention the great company (Renata, Ansgar, and Angela), the location (a block away from the office), and the price (free).

Irmã coruja | Proud sister

Acabei de encontrar outra foto linda da minha irmãzinha Clarice no Flickr. Adoro quando encontro uma de surpresa. Ela tem varias! Essa outra e muito bonita também....mas tem mais essa daqui, aqui e aqui. Bastante "views" e comentários em todas elas! Da-lhe Kiki!! (meu apelido pra ela)

Para quem não sabe, minha irmã mais nova e uma talentosa percussionista que toca entre outras bandas no "Choro na Feira", grupo de chorinho que se apresenta todo sábado de manhã na praça General Glicerio, em Laranjeiras, bairro do Rio de Janeiro. Ela também da aula de pandeiro na UNIRIO (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro). Vocês podem checar ela ensinando o Phil a tocar pandeiro aqui.

I've just found another beautiful picture of my little sister Clarice on Flickr. I love when I find one by surprise. She has quite a few there! This one is really pretty too....but there is also another one here, here and here. Lots of views and comments in all of them! Go Kiki!! (That's what I call her)

For those of you who don't know, my younger sister Clarice is a talented percussionist and one of the bands she plays in is "Choro na Feira", a "chorinho" group that plays every Saturday at General Glicerio Square in Laranjeiras, a neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. She also teaches tambourine classes at UNIRIO (Rio de Janeiro Federal University). You can check her out here teaching Phil how to play the tambourine.

O fotografo Bobby Neel Adams (foto ao lado) tem um lindo trabalho  colando imagens da mesma pessoa em idades diferentes chamado Age-Maps e outro juntando imagens de casais chamado Couples.

Ele me inspirou... ofereço meus serviços de design gráfico para família e amigos...se alguém tiver fotos apropriadas para uma colagem e só mandar. Repare que elas precisam ter as mesma posição e expressão.

Photographer Bobby Neel Adams (photo) does beautiful work merging pictures of the same person in different ages called Age-Maps and merging couples called Couples.

He inspired me...I offer my graphic design services to friends and family...if anyone has appropriate pictures just send it over. Note that it needs to have the same expression and position in order to work.

Big Sur Trip: Our Pictures Are Up

We just finished uploading our pictures from our Dec. 27 - Dec. 30 trip down the California Central Coast.

We stayed at Big Sur's Fernwood Resort, almost made it to Hearst Castle, and stopped by Monterey and Carmel.

And, of course, who could forget the elephant seals.
